The right wood

The proprietors attach great importance to the signs and influence of the moon.

Times for felling wood as collected from old documents belonging to carpenters and foresters:

  • If wood is felled in the last days of December and in the first days of January, such wood will not rot, will not be eaten by worms and, the older it is, the harder it becomes.
  • If wood is felled when the moon is at its smallest, this can be cut while it is still green, and will not tear or shrink.
  • If wood is felled while the moon is waxing and within the sign of Pisces, it will not tear or shrink.
  • If wood is felled in the three days around the Conversion of St. Paul, the 25th January, the second Valentine’s Day, the 7th January, the 3rd day of St. Giles or the 1st September, it will not rot.
  • Wood felled December 1st, January 1st and March 1st will not split and remains heavy. Wood felled on 7th, 8th and 9th January is best suited for flooring – but the condition for this is that the moon "stays below the earth".
  • If wood is felled in the first four days of May it will not rot and will not be susceptible to woodworm.
  • The 25th March, the 29th June and the 31st December are special days. Wood felled on these days will not shrink.
  • Wood felled on the Eve of St. Margaret’s Day (10th June) will not split, no matter whether the moon is waxing or waning.
  • Wood felled in the last days of February while the moon is waning will not grow again; even the roots will rot. Weeds should be removed on the morning of 18th June – if this is done they will not grow again.
  • Firewood should be cut during the first quarter of the waxing moon.
  • 31st January as well as 1st and 2nd February are clearing days. (Note: "clear the forest")
  • If wood is felled on the last two Fridays in March, this will not be susceptible to woodworm. No woodworm or moths will attack cabinets and chests made from this wood.
